A Miracle Marathon For Me And You: 27 Miles In 27 Days

posted by on 09/10/2014

I’m stoked to share that I’m serving as a lead blogger for this fall’s Miracle Marathon, specifically in support of Children’s Hospital Colorado in Denver. Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals raise funds for 170 children’s hospitals across North America.

Did you know that approximately 27.2 kids in the U.S are diagnosed with cancer every day?

Every 27.2 days approximately 1,100 kids will be diagnosed with Type One Diabetes?

And approximately 27.2 kids in the U.S will die each month from cancer?

We were on the receiving end of that second statistic in January 2011 (five days before my daughter’s 10th birthday) and I’m here to tell you, it was major suckage.

When she was almost 12, she came down with the stomach flu. The stomach flu can be very dangerous for a Type One Diabetic, they run the risk of their blood sugar going too high and developing Ketoacidosis. In Zoe’s case, she vomited right after taking a huge dose of insulin to cover the carbs in the dinner she was about to eat and her blood sugar bottomed out for hours. Early the next morning after a terrible night of sickness and battling her glucose levels and crying (me), her pediatric endocrinologist sent us straight to Children’s Hospital Colorado. He called ahead to let them know we were on our way and the level of care and compassion she received while in the ER was above and beyond anything I have ever seen in a hospital. The staff stopped her vomiting almost immediately, but she was already extremely dehydrated spilling a large amount of ketones, but they fixed her right up. We were there for about 10 hours and my only regret was that I didn’t take her in sooner, lesson learned. Children’s Hospital Colorado is our preferred hospital and it is on all their school/activity forms.

So, what is the Miracle Marathon? It’s a 27-day virtual fundraising campaign in which participants run, walk, or achieve forward motion of any kind one mile per day starting September 16th. The first 26 days are completed at your own pace—wherever and whenever you want. On Day 27, October 12th, the final 1.2 miles will be started as a group at 2:27 pm EST. It’s a marathon, plus a mile, for the kiddos. It’s perfect for those of us who like the idea of completing a marathon but would rather not complete all the miles at once.
