Ottoman Opinions Needed

I was able to go to my safe place last night.  Safe place=Target.  And I was alone!

I would also like to point out that I only spent $11 (Clorox wipes 3 pack, hand soap, dish soap).  Yes, they were about to close and yes, I saw 32 things I wanted, mostly this friendly little storage ottoman and how I’m pretty sure I want to adopt it.

adorbs

(I would probably paint the legs white.)

I showed the photo to Jeff and he said, “It’s just going to end up full of toys, $60 for a toy holder?”

What do people without all the toys put in their ottomans?  Magazines? Remotes? Uncut cocaine? (don’t do that)

Should I go back and buy this?  Thoughts are appreciated.

Even if it does house toys, they will be the happiest toys ever to live in such a bright, cheery home! ;)

the insides always smell weird like toxic chemicals and you can’t put anything in them or it transfers. I’ve tried crumpled newspaper, baking soda, smelly stuff, you name it. You can’t get rid of the toxicity. Build one yourself without chemicals.
You probably still won’t put anything in it though.

I can’t really tell how big it is, but We have a rectangular storage ottoman that we use to keep all our blankets in. :) I think it’s adorable!!

I love ottomans, especially ones that you can put stuff in. You should definitely go back and get it.
Maybe it is an expensive toy holder, buuuuut it is a very pretty one. Plus, that means if you have people over last minute, it makes clean up easier. Even if that doesn’t happen, just tell Jeff that.

Also? $11 at Target is a fucking record. I went in the other day to buy ONE thing, and spent $70 on stuff we “needed.”

We keep blankets and games in ours, and when people come over it hides the crap from the desk/table. Also it’s extra seating AND you can put your feet up on it. AND it looks way better than the usual toy basket or box.

it seems rather small for 60 dollar toy storage. you could get bigger and cheaper at the container store. this one is one of my favorites: http://www.containerstore.com/shop/toyStorage/openBinsBaskets?productId=10029538&N=80470

I’ve always had a couple of ottoman’s in my house. One in my bedroom works as a seat for my vanity but also where I store seasonal clothes that I don’t need taking up room in my closet. Another I use in the place of a coffee table. The cushion is firm enough to set all manner of object on – cups of coffee, books, remotes, laptop, etc. Inside are blankets and pillows, sometimes my coats, or it works as just a bin to toss stuff into when I don’t feel like truly cleaning up. I also have one that functions as an extra seat at the dining table, or a footstool if I’m working there (no office). I’m single and have a small kitchen so I put all the extra kitchenware that I don’t use on a daily basis in it: plates, cups, big pots, baking stuff, etc.

I prefer ottomans because they replace the need for plastic storage bins filling spaces that can be used for other needs and you can more easily access things that are usually pushed in boxes at the back of a garage or closet. Plus, you may use the ottoman for toys now, but it’s storage purposes can and will be changed over time depending on needs. $60 IS kind of a high price for an ottoman the size and quality shown in the photo above. Stores like Ross, TJ Max, Tuesday Morning, Home Goods, or even thrift stores will offer better deals for higher quality.

Does it go with your decor? Do you have yellow? Are you going to put your feet on it while you watch tv or something? I have found that most of those ottomans are too high to be a decent foot rest, so that’s always my main concern.

    I await your decision.

Grab all the toys from the living room and sell them on Craigslist. Make sixty bucks and buy it. Win win.

I would! Not only you are going to get rid of toys clusterf**k but you are going to get nice bright and shiny! Looks like a double win for me :) If we wouldnt be leaving the states I would go and get it myself….:) Anyways, men and fish don’t know how the proper toy storage looks like anyways :)

Sheets!!!!! Keeps linen closet open for Nyquil and neosporin and toilet paper.

We had storage ottomans when we lived in Santa Barbara. We used to keep blankets (esp. the ones we liked to use on the couch in winter) in them.

Those are cute! The yellow & white is so cheery!

Too pricey for that piece. It’s nice but not that nice.

Storage is storage, regardless of what it is storing. It makes your space more beautiful, while simultaneously allowing you to quickly hide things that are less so.

    My two cents :)

You should totally go back and buy that. I only spent twenty minutes trying to think of stuff other than toys you can put in there. And came up with nothing. But you should buy it anyway.

    Target is coming to Canada!!!

I have only been in a Target store once and that involved over an hour on the road, over an hour waiting to cross the border and then the reverse on the way home. Sometime soon there will be one somewhere near me!

I have nothing to store in an ottoman, that is a nice one though.

  • Katie

Yes, go back to buy it! We have an ottoman from Target that we keep toys in, and I love it because all the living room toys can magically disappear after my little guy goes to bed or when non-kid people who are not impressed with my son’s Elmo action figure collection come over. This one is so darn cute. Also, mad props for spending $11 at Target. I am not as strong as you, but it’s inspiring to read that someone was able to do it!

You are wise to not make an impulse purchase, which is why I have a fake tortoiseshell from Target in exactly that yellowy-mustardy color hanging in my kids’ bathroom.

I am the worst influence when it comes to other people buying stuff, and I say go for it. You won’t have toys forever, and eventually you can use that ottoman for something else entirely. Like extra cash if you’re lucky.

Look at it this way… you’re getting an ottoman, a toybox, and an extra seat. That works out to only $20 for the toy storage part. A steal, if you ask me.

  • Megan

No. Unless you have a clearly defined purpose for it, refrain.

  • Kelly @ Turned up to ELEVEN!

I think it’s really cute! But I’m on a no spending unless it’s a NEED budget right now… so the little spender in me is saying BUY IT, the frugal “DO MORE WITH LESS” girl is saying to wait a few days and see if you still are dying to have it.

That being said, I had fun saying the title of this post over and over. Ottoman Options – rolls off the tongue nicely.

We have a Target ottoman circa a few years ago, and it is way too small to hold very many kid toys (except for maybe tiny pieces of something), so now it functions as a cat perch by the window and we keep cat toys in it. I would say hold out for something bigger if you want to use it for practical storage :)

It’s adorable! I don’t know, if that was in my home it would be full of Lego. But it might be nice to store magazines or DVD’s in.

It’s really cute and I can see why you want it seems a bit small for $60. I love me some Target (especially those stupid little $1 aisles) but why is their home good stuff always so expensive? It gives me shopping depression. You might be better off finding something bigger at Homegoods that might be able to hold more.

First of all, congratulations on your restraint in getting out of Target for only $11! That’s incredible! About the ottoman: unless you have been looking for something just like that for a while, I’d hold off. It’s cute, but kinda small to hold many toys (and $60!); our toys all seem to be huge dump trucks and cars and things that wouldn’t really fit in there. You seem to do v. well on craigslist. My suggestion: start there if you haven’t already shopped around.

  • Sarah

We only have toys in ours. :( But once upon a time, before Legos and trucks, we kept throw blankets & misc. living area objects (remotes, etc.).

If you have to put toys in something, let that something be something that you’d like to look at. Preferably something cute that you love that will not get in your way and will look WAY BETTER than a pile of toys!

Um…If I didn’t need it for toys (which I would), I would probably put yarn in it. Or whatever my current craft project was that I wanted in the living room but not in my face, mocking me.

That also seems a poor color choice for something people put their feet on.

  • SnorkMaiden

When you take the lid off our ottoman you see a throw blanket. Go down a layer and you find all the extra Nintendo and Wii controllers, so I guess ours is a toyholder, too even though we don’t have kids.

Our place is really small so it doesn’t take much clutter to make it look out of control. I say go for it!

    GET IT.

I was at Target on Wednesday morning, I saw the same ottoman, and stretched my hand out towards it longingly, gave it a pitiful sad face, and had to walk away. (Thanks a lot stupid ass broken pipe/ expensive plumber man.)

That ottoman is perfect, and lovely, and PERFECT.

    Go get it.
