31 Days: The Freezer

posted by Zakary on October 21, 2012 | 17 comments (leave one of your own)

I clean my refrigerator once a week, but I do not apply this same quality control to the freezer. I needed red bell pepper this morning for the brunch I was preparing and I knew I had some frozen. It dawned on me while rummaging through our freezer that it was the opposite of clean.

I emptied everything out onto the counter and realized it was downright gross.

Jeff removed the drawer and hosed it out onto our flower bed.  Because freezer burned corn is good for the soil probably.

I wiped the entire freezer down with vinegar while he had the drawer out, the rails, the bottom of the freezer, the rubber seal edge thingy on the door.  He put the drawer back in and we marveled at the cleanliness.

I found a plastic bin that we weren’t using in the office and I scrubbed it out and decided to keep it on the right side of the freezer with the meats in it, it just makes me feel better knowing that the meat is separate from the rest of the food.  Everything else can be friends on the left.

And we vowed never to freeze black bananas ever again (shudder).

For 31 days, I’m tackling the Hot Mess.  Read all about it here.

I won’t lie. This was inspiring. And made me wish I had a drawer for my freezer. Because you are so right, chicken should not be mingling with frozen waffles.

I hate, hate, hate my bottom freezer with the fire of 1,000 suns. Good job on cleaning yours. I hate my refrigerator so much I approach it only when necessary.

I hope this isn’t creepy to comment twice in a row on your husband being awesome, but I can’t help it! It’s so cool he’s helping you with some of your 31 days projects.

Last week my parents’ freezer, purchased in 1982, finally bit the dust. The things they found in that freezer make a frozen black banana look edible.

Two things: I am scared out of my mind to find out what is lurking in the depths of my stupid, skinny, side-by-side, doesn’t fit a pizza box freezer. Thanks for being real about what happens in there.

Your 31-day challenge has inspired me to organize some shiz. I spent most of Saturday finishing up some small little projects. Problem is, I ran out of steam to blog about them all. I pulled off one post about our biggest accomplishment, but it doesn’t include all the little things I accomplished too (maybe tomorrow…). Go you for doing them AND photographing them AND blogging them!

Oh Honey. ( I just call our fridge crisper a ‘rotter’ to get the expectations aligned realistically.) Isn’t it AMAZING what a little cleaning will do? I think Nate Berkus jsut said cleaning your house is the biggest remodel you can do. I blogged a 5 minute free kitchen makeover you might enjoy!

Are you messing with us or do you really clean your refrigerator once a week? And if so, do those weeks run consecutively?

Sight and smell are my motivators for cleaning. 40% sight, 60% smell. Ok, maybe 30-70. 20-80 tops.

I wipe out my refrigerator every Thursday before I go grocery shopping. It’s probably the cleanest thing in my house.

When they are turning, Jeff throws them in the freezer because he thinks I will use them to make smoothies or whatever the hell you use black bananas for. Black bananas are the devil’s work and I won’t use them for anything.

We actually save brown bananas but you have to take them out of the skin and put them in an empty storage container (Craig uses ones from his cottage cheese). We then use the frozen bananas for smoothies and to make icecream – combine banana and nutella and it’s amazing. Anyway, great job on the clean out!

So I have to say about bananas: I just purchased a YO NANAS.
Seriously my favorite new toy and I am a gadget girl deluxe.
(Steve and Paige game me a pickle grabber and garlic wheel last Christmas).
But back to bananas. As soon as they start to get leopard spots, peel and freeze in a plastic bag.

The Yo Nanas is a machine that you stick the frozen banana through like the slot on a food processor, and it comes out the consistency of soft ice cream. Can also do other frozen fruits, but I just throw on some chocolate chips and call it a day. FABULOUS way to eat fruit.

I want one just so I can say YO NANAS!
