31 Days: The Chair

posted by Zakary on October 3, 2012 | 15 comments (leave one of your own)

A few months ago, I painted a wingback chair. The chair looked fantastic, but I decided two weeks ago to paint the legs white. I took the chair outside, wrapped it lovingly in trash bags, taped everything off, and placed it on a drop cloth.

I sprayed the legs with two light coats of glossy white and was stoked, it looked great.

Until a gigantic gust of wind blew the drop cloth UP and it STUCK to the legs of the chair because yeah, they weren’t dry.

I was filled with so much unhealthy anger towards Mother Nature that it was borderline frightening. I dragged that stupid chair inside and left it in all its glory.

Glory=covered in a few trash bags and half sanded legs.  It has been in my living room like this ever since. And we have actually been sitting on it, apparently the rustling of the weird redneck slipcover doesn’t bother us one bit.

Yesterday was a very nice day, so I brought out my paint and wrapped the chair back up.

Mother Nature decided to take it easy on me and there was no wind.  I glossied (it’s a word) those legs right up.

I’m letting the legs dry thoroughly before I move it back inside and the chair is currently on my porch.  Baby steps, y’all.

For 31 days, I’m tackling the Hot Mess.  Read all about it here.

Haha! That always happens to me, I’m glad I’m not the only one. Seriously though I had just finished spraying a coat of paint on my doors (there’s 4 of them right now) in the garage when a gust of wind blows all the dust (from sanding said doors) right to my doors. I guess it was better than a drop cloth. Usually if I leave it alone I can just knock off the dust with a light sanding. Oh, and hopefully your month of cleaning and stuff will motivate me. I bet I could find you some drywall dust in my living room.

My favorite part is that you continued to sit on it. (Hahahahahaha!)

The sitting-on-garbage-bag-swathed-chair is the best because I can see us doing that at my house. We learn to adapt! Hahha!

I haven’t blogged about any of my endeavors, but I promise I am doing something every day so far. Yesterday I unpacked (and stored) a suitcase that has been on my bedroom floor for about 3 weeks. And I’m also throwing away piles of crap every day, too, for good measure. Yesterday it was a diaper bag that folds out to a little travel bed for an infant. Lennon is 2 and its been broken since he was old enough to roll over and trash the sides. I kept thinking I’d fix it and give it to someone. Why don’t I throw things away!!!

I’m in love with your 31 days and it is only day 3. Just so you know. That I’m in love with it. Clearly you already know that it is day 3.

Wait, you actually painted the chair? Like, fabric? With what? and is it scratchy rough? I need a Zdub tutorial, please!

      Tutorial forthcoming.

And the chair isn’t scratchy at all, I used fabric paint.

Dude. For real? I need to know how to do this.

I like the blue color of this chair. Would love to see a photo of it with the rest of the room. Also, thanks for doing this. Definitely motivating (or guilting – even more powerful!) me. I won’t get to 31 messes this month, but I’ve already finished one, and if I can get to 3.1 total, I’ll be psyched!

I had no idea that fabric paint existed. Thanks, ZDub. You are a wealth of information!

“apparently the rustling of the weird redneck slipcover doesn’t bother us one bit.” I literally choked on my coffee when I read this, SO FUNNY, especially because I know the same thing would happen in my house.
