31 Days: The Bathroom

You. Guys. 31 Days is up, I honestly can’t believe I stuck with this series for the entire month. I’m not going to lie, this last project almost did me in. I thought about quitting last night at 1 a.m. when I was up painting my bathroom.

Our master bathroom has needed attention since the day we moved in.

Untitled

The previous owners painted the cabinets a pale yellow, which I like. I don’t love the countertop, but I need to pick my battles. At this point in time, my battle is my unfinished kitchen. Redoing the bathroom is waaay down on Jeff’s list.  When we moved in, I basically bought a shower curtain that had a squirrel! on it and called it a day.

Untitled

I decided I could at least clean up the bathroom lights and it kinda evolved.

Untitled

It took me three days, well, three nights actually, of prep work and painting. Jeff was super happy about taking a shower next to the five gallon bucket of paint and the step ladder in the middle of the bathroom.

Untitled

I painted the trim Behr’s Ultra White in semi gloss and the walls are Behr’s Powdered Snow (white with a tiny bit of yellow) in eggshell.  I did not paint the cabinets, I decided to embrace the pale yellow.

Untitled

I found the $15 vanity tray at the antique mart this weekend and the soap dispenser and jar are from Target.

Untitled

The window is bare for now, I ordered roman shades of the bamboo variety today because I’ll be damned if I’m hanging up those janky ill fitting curtains that were up before.  I purchased hand and bath towels at Bed Bath & Beyond and I love the color. I rolled them up and stuck them in a woven basket that my grandmother made (seriously) to distract you from the fact that I don’t have a towel bar (yet).

Untitled

The shower curtain is also from Target and while I wanted the ultra ruffle curtain, I thought that might be pushing it.  I actually hung two of the same shower curtains on the rod because I think it looks better when it is more full.  I think maybe my mom could sew them together, but let’s be honest, I’m pretty sure that might not happen and I’m okay with it.  I found the white bathmat at Kohl’s, it’s Vera Wang.  I bought it because she’s Asian and it was the only white bathmat I could find that had a rubber backing.

Untitled

The shower curtain makes me ridiculously happy.  I will let you know what Jeff says when he gets home tonight because this is a total chick’s bathroom.

Untitled

I wanted floating shelves above the toilet and went as far to look up directions on Pinterest regarding how to build your own, but then I snapped out of it.  I found this shelf at the antique mart for $21, sold.  Also, I hung that shelf this morning by myself.  I’m not sure it’s exactly centered, but I anchored it and CLOSE ENOUGH.

Untitled

If you need me, I will be hanging out in the bathroom with a glass of wine and the kids Halloween candy admiring my work. I actually might sleep in here mostly because I am so flipping tired, you guys.

Untitled

What did I learn this month? The hardest part of a project is just deciding to do it. I was the only one holding myself back, you know? There is a real feeling of accomplishment when I complete a project and turn the hot mess around. I also realized how much I still really love blogging (thank you).

And just like that, the dishes are done, man.

That looks amazing. You ended on an awesome high note. And I love how in the grown-up world, everyone totally admits to eating their kids’ halloween candy.

I’m trying to control myself around the candy, I called dibs on the Butterfingers and Zoe got ONE and Troy didn’t get ANY.

Your bathroom looks amazing! Although I’m sad the squirrel curtain is gone.

How did the lights turn out? Can I request a close up picture?

Hell to the yeah on the Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead reference.

You deserve a medal for awesome house project blog hot messing completeness.

    • Zakary

Thanks! I will post a close up, I like to string you along. :)

I came across your blog about a month ago via another Type 1 diabetes blog and I have really enjoyed following your projects. You are a very talented writer and have a great sense of humor. Thanks for making me laugh this month and best wishes to your daughter. I’ve been Type 1 since 10/26/95.

      High five and THANK YOU.

Totally proud of you for sticking it out for the 31 days. I think my 31 days are going to occur over the next 6 months.

My 31 Days next year will be 31 Days Of Wine. I’m not kidding.

      • tara

That is a great idea! Then you can try 31 different wines and write it off as “research.”

        • Zakary

          TAX WRITE OFF. Brilliant.

Very cool. Love how the room… and your project… came together. I would have loved a closeup of the bathroom lights, though. What a cliff-hanger that was! Looks pretty great.

I know, I totally owe you a close up. I took one and it didn’t come out very well.

I hope there’s a winner to this 31 Days thing because it should totally be you. AMAZING. I’m super jealous of the vanity tray.

I followed all 31 days and am glad you stuck with it. I would have given up on day 7. Please come help me finish painting my bathroom. My wife is ready to blow her lid. It’s been fun. Love your blog.

Your shelf over the toilet has inspired me to tell a little story. A friend of mine had a picture hanging over the toilet. They went on a week long vacation and came home to find out that the picture had fallen off the wall and hit a pipe behind the toilet. The pipe broke off or cracked or something. They came home to a flooded house. The shelf looks like a better choice. Too big to fit (and it’s anchored!)

I’m super impressed with the way you handled this project. Congratulations! Fist bump? No? Nevermind. I’m sure you’re house it now a perfect fit for a magazine cover (did I mention that before?) And I love your grandma’s stuff, the paintings and the basket, awesome ! :D

Lovely! And I have to give you double props for painting the trim white. We’ve been doing that room by room, and while I love the after, the during is HELLISH!

Painting the trim white is such a pain in the arse! Glad I am not the only crazy out there doing it a room at a time.

I am highly impressed that you kept with it. I’m also planning on trying that vinegar/dish soap cleaner thing. :)

I’m contemplating blogging for all of November. Or possibly taking down my blog. I’m not sure in the moment.

Way to finish with a bang! That was a huge project!

I have loved your blog this month (and always, of course.) Great job!

Congratulations on surviving your mad impulse to do the 31 days thing! It’s been a blast following along and personally not doing a @##$ thing! :D

also, sooooo totally have to remember the vinegar/Dawn trick. Maybe it can tame all the hair product my ex left in his bathroom’s shower….4 years ago… (what can I say, scrubbing tubs/showers is not my forté).

  • Wendy

Don’t sew the curtains together! You can split them in the middle & use curtain ties or pulls & make them loop super fancy & custom. I saw it on Pintrest, therefore it’s legit.

At least that’s what I tell myself when I try something I’ve seen there.

Have been receiving your blog via e-mail for a couple years now but wasn’t sure about reading consecutive posts about housecleaning/organizing, but I truly enjoyed every one and was reminded how satisfying it can be to do something every day that adds to the whole of our well being. Today I started small by washing out my kitchen trash and recycling cans. Tomorrow, who knows?

You are a complete rockstar for doing the whole 31 days! (And for including such an important cultural reference at the end.)

Your 31 days of accomplishments = awesome.

I have lived in my apartment for over 6 years and when I moved in one wall of the bedroom was painted a horrible colour, sometimes it looks brown, sometimes it looks eggplant. And yes, 6 years later that one wall is still the same.

    Come and visit me.
    Please.
    I will buy the paint.

  • Sarah

Looks great! I love how it turned out. Our bathroom currently has unfinished wood planks and plywood floors, no storage, and a leaky sink. Don’t judge. It’s a work in progress.

Your bathroom looks fantastic! It’s amazing what some paint and a few extras can do to a space.(Not to mention hard work) Maybe if I outed my horrible looking garage with no storage on my blog I would finally get up and do something about it! lol (Probably not. *sigh*)
