Have A Good Day. Just Like That.

This morning, over her bowl of Kix, Zoe informs me that her class will have a substitute teacher for the rest of the week. When you are in 4th grade, this is big news because you are just catching on that substitute teachers is code for “get away with murder”.

In my mind, it is code for “Dire-betes Hurdle”.

Do I call her substitute and mention that Zoe has Type One Dire-betes and please follow the instructions that hopefully the teacher mentioned? That Zoe needs a snack at 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.? That she needs to go to the office ten minutes before lunch for a glucose check and insulin?

After she finished her breakfast, Zoe grabbed her backpack, stopped briefly at my desk and scribbled something out on my notepad.  She informed me that she will just hand this to the substitute teacher before class and I worry way. too. much.

My name is Zoe

My name is ZDub and my daughter is a Type 1 Diabetic badass.

Not only does she have the dire-betes down, she’s got Z-Dub down as well!! My mom just told me the other day that she never stops worrying about her kids and we are adults and don’t have diabetes, so I can only imagine how this adds to the normal mother worry. She is kicking ass and taking names though, so you should be proud!! She’s a fireball!!

Oh my gosh – maybe I’m just having an exceptionally hormonal day, and I have been known to cry at the mere event of someone cutting me off in the Whole Foods parking lot on days like this, but the badass-ness of Zoe seriously just made my eyes well up while in class!

Also – I have the most amazing squirrel story for you involving a funeral home, a woman who has conversations with her deceased husband at stop signs, and a litany of oddball moments with my psuedo-family in Texas.

  • Veronica

Aww, she is a little badass. Well done, little lady!

  • MissCaron

Emphatically, yes, you (or Zoe) should let the sub know. As a former public AND current private school teacher, I can tell you that the sub hits the ground running and does not always have the chance or initiative to check these things out. The easier that you can make it for him/her, the better for everyone. Well done!

Your Zoe is a very brave little girl. I admire her courage of taking it all positively. She’s a charm.:-)

  • Mo

Does your child’s thoughfulness and initiative to solve her own problems sometimes make you cry? Or even just tear up a little because of what a complex and mature person she is in such a small package? Because it makes me cry.

  • kim

Why am I so impressed every time I read about her maturity? She is amazing, but you already knew that!

  • Kerri.

In the diabetes online community, we call that a “diabadass.”

    Well played, Zoe. :)
