Everywhere And All Of The Time

Being a mother is a pretty thankless job. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind picking up toys, checking homework, packing lunches, wiping noses, wiping butts, having the same argument over and over every morning before school about why it is not okay to wear pajamas to school, finding lost sippy cups and for the thousandth, millionth time, please brush your teeth.

They say being is a mom is the toughest job you will ever love. My kids are not a job, mostly because I can’t clock out for the day or call in drunk sick. I think motherhood is a mind bender, an utter and total trip. Most days, I feel like I’m barely keeping my head above water, that I’m only doing enough to get by and vigorously treading water while trying to juggle knives. That are on fire. I don’t keep the cleanest house, I don’t immediately put my laundry away (or at all), my kids sometimes stay up way too late, I don’t know how to do windows and I forget to water my plants.

But I keep trying, I won’t break, I can’t. Twenty years from now, when my babies are grown and gone and there are no more toys, I will have the cleanest house with spotless windows and the healthiest plants you have ever seen. And I will wonder where it went, how it flew by oh so quickly.

And while I don’t need a thank you, sometimes it’s nice to be Employee Of The Month.
