Daddies Daughter
While I was unpacking Zoe’s backpack on Monday, I came across a paper for a dance. A Daddy Daughter dance. Zoe was standing next to me at the kitchen counter and I saw her glance at the flyer and then suddenly drop her head, intensely studying the countertops. I asked her what was wrong. She told me nothing and turned the paper face down.
I asked her if she wanted to go to Daddy Daughter dance.
She looked up at me and tearfully told me she didn’t know which daddy to ask, Jeff Dad or Dad Dad.
My heart broke into a thousand pieces.
We talked and decided since it is the month of December, the busiest time of the year for a man that delivers packages for the United Parcel Services, that perhaps it might be difficult for Jeffie to be home before six o’clock. And Dad would certainly love to go dancing with his best girl, he would be off work at four thirty. And this won’t be the last dance.
However, it is her first dance. So last night we went shopping.
Zoe insisted on finding the most perfect dancing dress and the most perfect dancing shoes, like the ones they wear on Dancing With The Stars.
I think she did a mighty fine job.
When Jeff Dad got home from work, she asked him to teach her how to dance. With Zoe in her fanciest and Jeff in his dirty work uniform, they danced to Taylor Swift.
And I couldn’t be more proud.

Beautiful, just beautiful.

I, too, am a kid that struggled with the same issues … many a father-daughter dance were spent with the step-dad when the whole time I felt guilty it hadn't been my biological father, and vice versa. I'm so glad that arrangement was worked out so perfectly. I'm sure she was much relieved … and they still were able to spend a quality bonding moment together. How sweet!

My eyes are tearing up as I write this. I am a stepmom (no, not the evil kind!), and when my stepson was younger they had "Muffins for Moms" at his grade school. He took his mom every year, but one day he asked me to go instead. I just about died. I told him that I would love to go, but I know how much his mom looked forward to it every year. He looked at me and said, "You can come with us." I didn't end up going because I respect the relationship he has with his mom, but we decided to have our own Muffins for Moms at our house.
I can't even imagine how difficult it is for children in these situations. Zoe sounds like a sweet and sensitive girl. You're very lucky.

You're making me tear up! That is such a sweet story. I always dreaded father-daughter things like this growing up, because my dad died when I was 4. I love that Zoe made sure to include Jeff.
